Mike Wetzel is a partner in the law firm of Fitzwater Meyer, LLP. His
practice emphasizes estate planning and administration, business, real estate
matters, tax controversies and tax litigation.
Mike enjoys all aspects of estate planning and administration. These areas
include estate and gift tax planning, estate planning for young families, probate,
and trust administration. Mike brings his estate planning knowledge and litigation
skills together to advocate for clients in estate litigation, trust litigation
and disputes involving protected persons. He prefers a practical approach to
such cases; seeking a fair settlement yet being ready and able to go to trial
if necessary.
His tax litigation experience includes cases in Oregon, Washington, California
and Alaska; trials in the U.S. Tax Court and Oregon Tax Court; and tax cases
before the U.S. District Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has handled
cases involving income taxes, employment taxes, estate taxes, tax issues relating
to divorce, innocent spouse defenses, business taxes, property tax exemptions,
penalty waivers and collection issues involving the IRS and other taxing agencies.
Mike rounds out his practice assisting small and midsize companies and individuals
in business formation, buy sell agreements, purchase and sale transactions,
mergers and real estate matters. He also represents business owners and professionals
in the negotiation and preparation of prenuptial agreements.
Mr. Wetzel is currently a Captain with the Oregon Army National Guard JAGC.
He completed the Officer’s Basic Course at Ft. Lee, Virginia and is assigned
as staff Judge Advocate for the 82nd Brigade. He regularly serves as trial
and defense counsel in separation and other disciplinary matters.
Mike grew up in Oregon and holds a B.S. from Willamette University in Salem
and a J.D. from J.D. Vanderbilt University in Nashville,Tennessee. He was admitted
to the Oregon State Bar in 1995.
