With a new year brings a new Advance Directive Form for Oregon. But what does that mean for you?
An Advance Directive is a legal document that is helpful in safeguarding your health care wishes. It allows you to name a person to make medical decisions for you, if you are unable to make those decisions yourself. It also allows you to make decisions ahead of time about end of life care such as pain management and life support. Making these difficult decisions ahead of time can take the burden off your loved ones.
Why do we have a new Advance Directive form?
Earlier in 2018, Governor Brown signed into law a modified Advanced Directive statute with the goal of simplifying both the language and the execution of the legal document. The new law also provides a process to continually improve the form by bringing together a committee of attorneys and health care professionals to make future revisions.
Oregon’s new Advance Directive form goes into effect on January 1, 2019. Here are a few things you should know:
An Advance Directive is recommended for all adults 18 and older, regardless of their health status.
If you have already signed an Advance Directive it will remain valid.
If you do not have an Advance Directive you will have to use the new form starting January 1, 2019.
If you would like assistance completing an Advance Directive or have any questions, we encourage you to reach out to one of our estate planning attorneys.
